Last week, several PC gamers complained that the latest major release of Windows 11, the 2022 update, was messing up their Nvidia graphics cards. Looks like they’re not alone: Microsoft is pausing automatic updates for some users with Intel’s latest audio drivers because it’s allegedly causing the dreaded blue screen crash.
A support page on Learn.Microsoft.com, identified by BleepingComputer, details the issue. Some users of laptops and desktops with integrated sound cards with Intel Smart Sound Technology, equipped on systems with 11th Gen Core and Atom processors, are seeing their systems crash after upgrading to the 2022 update or the big Windows release of the year past. The problem appears to be with an outdated driver for SST: Microsoft recommends updating to driver version 10.30.00.5714 or 10.29.00.5714 depending on your specific hardware implementation. After updating to the relevant driver, Windows 11 Update 22H2 should be available within 48 hours.
Between that and the Nvidia issue, it might seem like this particular Windows update is fraught with issues… but that’s a bit simplified. It’s a massive update, the biggest of the calendar year, and it’s rolling out to hundreds of millions of users at once. Even with a long testing period, the problems encountered so far are quite minor.
