What to Look for in a Fire Stick VPN
First, let’s get the obvious out of the way: you want a VPN that’s on the Amazon Appstore. VPNs that support a router are great for anyone looking to buy a router with a built-in VPN or looking to upgrade a compatible router. For most people, it is preferable to just have a VPN app on their device.
Once you find out which VPNs are on the Appstore, you’ll want to avoid the ones you’ve never heard of. As we’ve said many times, VPNs are all about trust, and it’s hard to trust something that doesn’t have a reputation of any kind.
Next, you want a VPN that supports whatever service you want to use. If you want to get around Netflix geo-restrictions, you need something that promises Netflix support. If you want to stream something based in India then obviously you will need servers in India. Most of the conventional services we recommend here will apply to the scenarios just described.
Once you’ve completed these critical things, you want a fast VPN. If you don’t have enough speed, you can end up with frustrating interruptions in your streams. The good news is that the speeds on all the VPNs we’ve mentioned here are top notch. So unless you’re trying to do something very specific (like streaming Australian content while living in Boston) that requires special speed considerations, any of the VPNs mentioned here should work just fine.
Privacy can be useful too, but the reality is, if you just want a VPN for streaming, privacy isn’t an issue. However, if you’re concerned about privacy, check out our reviews of all the VPNs mentioned here for their privacy policies.
how we test
All VPNs we reviewed are tested on Windows, unless otherwise specified, over a hard-line connection. Since the Fire Stick’s default connection is via Wi-Fi, speed expectations will be a little different. However, our tests are still a good guide to the features of each VPN. Also keep in mind that you can get adapters for the Fire Stick if you want to use Ethernet for streaming.
Our VPN tests run over three days. Each day, we test at a different time of day. Each test includes the speed of five different countries three times each. These tests are then calculated to obtain an average speed for each country for each day. After all tests are done, all average scores are calculated together to get an overall average VPN speed. We then compare the global average to the average base speed (taken each day) and then express that average VPN speed as a percentage of the base speed. We don’t quote actual megabits per second speeds as there are many factors that can influence them, from your ISP, your location, to your devices. The percentages, however, give you a better idea of what to expect in terms of lost bandwidth when you enable VPN on your network.
Fire TV Sticks are fantastic little streaming devices, and if you’re looking to expand your streaming catalog, a Fire TV Stick with a good VPN app is even better.
Common questions
What is a VPN?
A VPN, or virtual private network, encrypts your internet traffic and disguises your identity as you browse the internet. When used with an Amazon Fire TV Stick, a VPN will allow you to connect to their servers across the world. So, if you want to access location-restricted content like streaming services, you can connect to the corresponding country’s server and get access that way.
How does a VPN work?
A VPN service lets you hide your original IP address by redirecting it through one of your own remote servers. To anyone looking, the VPN server appears to be the source of your data rather than your actual location. These remote servers can be located in different countries around the world or in various locations in your own country. In addition, all network traffic from your computer to the VPN is sent over a secure, encrypted connection.
When connected to a VPN, all your computer’s traffic is sent through the VPN on its way to the destination website. The website then sends its response back through the VPN, through the secure connection back to your computer. All traffic forwarded through the VPN appears to come from your server and not your own computer. This can prevent your ISP and other third parties from snooping on your internet activity.
Are VPNs Legal to Use?
Yes, in many countries, including the United States, using a VPN is completely legal. While some websites may try to block VPN connections for their own reasons, they can still be used. Please note that while using a VPN is legal, some of the activities performed while using a VPN can be illegal. Activities such as downloading pirated copyrighted content or accessing dark web marketplaces are illegal with and no VPN.
