What to Look for When Buying a Dashboard Camera
When purchasing a dash cam, you will want to focus on some important features like video capabilities, recording options, and other useful features. Video assets will be the most important aspect of your decision. You’ll want to consider whether you need a front and back view or just a front view. Also, check the resolution – we recommend at least 1080p, but premium 4K resolution panel cameras really do make a difference if you can vary the extra cost. Also, you’ll want to take a look at the field of view. The sweet spot seems to be between the 120 to 140 degree field of view, as anything less can miss important things and anything more can cause your recordings to distort.
Next, you’ll want to decide on the recording options you need. Things like continuous loop recording that automatically overwrites older recordings at specified intervals (unless saved) to minimize storage requirements, or incident recording that uses motion detection and triggered impact detection to record potential accidents. As for storage options, you’ll generally find two options to choose from: cloud storage and microSD card storage. Cloud storage isn’t all that common, but it can be good if you’re worried about losing a physical memory card. Otherwise, a microSD card will be the most common option.
Finally, you should consider any other useful features that a particular dash cam can provide. This includes GPS navigation, phone connectivity, parking monitoring, night vision and speed detection. This will all depend on your personal preference, but it should be taken into account before purchasing.
